Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student studying in Canada, has died, according to the Consulate General of Indian in Vancouver.

On Thursday night (IST), the ‘India in Vancouver’ account released an official statement, confirming the Indian national’s tragic passing without going into much detail. “We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at University of Calgary,” they said.

The Consulate further revealed that they were in touch with the authorities as they simultaneously offered the needed assistance to the bereaved family. “Our heartfelt condolences & prayers are with his family & friends of the deceased,” said the X post, which also tagged Randhir Jaiswal, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, the High Commission of India in Ottawa, Canada, and External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.

Who is Tanya Tyagi: What we know so far

While more details are awaited, a simple Google search of Tyagi’s name took us to a LinkedIn page. It shows that the Indian student was pursuing her Masters in Food Safety and Quality from University of Alberta in Canada. It also indicates that she completed her Bachelor of Technology at Jaypee Institute of Information Technology.

Her professional experience included having worked as a retail sales manager at Metro Mart Store in Delhi, a quality assurance intern at Zippy Edible Products Pvt Ltd in Uttarakhand, and a market research associate at Jasper Colin Research. Tyagi also served as a quality control intern at Enviro Lab in Rajasthan in 2019 and a business development intern at DP Jindal Groups in Gurugram in 2018.

Cause of death yet to be revealed officially

Although Tanya Tyagi’s cause of death has not yet been outed by the officials, an unverified social media post linked to an advocate said otherwise in an “Appeal 4 help.”

As per this X post shared by Ishu Tyagi, the Indian student who died in Canada was from Northeast Delhi. A resident address has also been mentioned. According to the lawyer, Tanya passed away on June 17, 2025, due to a heart attack. “The student’s family has appealed to PM Modi for help in bringing her body back,” he wrote.

In a follow-up post, the advocate noted the alleged name of the deceased student’s father – Vipul Tyagi.

Unfortunately, Tanya Tyagi is among the many students who have lost their lives on foreign soil. In April, the Indian Embassy in Canada confirmed that Vanshika Saini, 21, had been found dead in Ottawa after being reported missing for days. Her death, in turn, came just days after Harsimrat Randhawa was killed in Canada after getting caught in the middle of a shootout.
