28-year-old Surj Singh Salaria, an Indian-origin resident of Calgary, Canada, was arrested at Coutts border crossing after nearly 77 kg of cocaine was found in a commercial truck, according to the Canada Border Services Agency’s news release dated October 27.

Officials belatedly announced the shocking discovery, which was actually made on September 25 during a second examination of the truck. Authorities revealed that the estimated street value of the cocaine found on the commercial truck seeking entry into Canada from the US was $7 million.

Charges against Indian-origin truck driver Surj Singh Salaria revealed

The news came to light around the time of Salaria’s initial court appearance. He was scheduled to be present in Lethbridge Provincial Court on Oct. 27, 2025.

Surj Singh Salaria has since been charged with:

  • “Importation of a controlled substances contrary to section 6(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Attempting to export goods that are prohibited, controlled or regulated contrary to section 160 of the Customs Act”

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Federal Policing Northwest Region, CBSA and Calgary Police Service’s joint operation called the Integrated Border Enforcement Team in Alberta was informed about the development, prompting a criminal investigation into the Calgary man.

The latest Canada cocaine bust case has expanded the pool of arrests linked to Indian-origin truck drivers that has already wreaked havoc in California, USA.
