An Indian national, who was in Canada on a temporary visa, is facing deportation and has been barred from entering the country ever again. 51-year-old Jagjit Singh has been convicted of criminally harassing teenage, high-school-attending girls in Sarnia, Ontario, as per Canadian news reports and authorities.

Indian man Jagjit Singh was arrested in Canada

The case traces back to September, with the man in question said to have arrived in Canada in July on a six-month visitor visa to meet his newborn grandchild. At the time, the Sarnia Police Service had multiple complaints about a man showing up near a north-end high school. Officials said “he initiated unsolicited and inappropriate conversations” involving drugs and alcohol with the female teens. He even asked to pose for photos.

The Sarnia authorities have since revealed that the 51-year-old visitor began frequenting the area over a short period of time. As he continued approaching the high school girls, “the boldness of his interactions” with them also increased. Singh even followed the students after they left the school property. At one point, Jagjit intentionally groped one of the female students, who eventually complained about him to police through the school administration.

The Sarnia Police Criminal Investigations Division first arrested Singh, who was temporarily staying at Manhattan Drive, on September 16. He was later remanded and released by the court on September 19.

A week later, the Sarnia Police Service laid bare the additional charges against Singh. After his bail hearing on September 23, he was remanded into custody, and was slated for another court appearance on September 24.

“On September 23rd, 2025, the Sarnia Police Service arrested Jagjit SINGH (51 years of age), of Manhattan Drive, for the following additional offences: Sexual Assault, Sexual Interference,” according to the official press release.

Justice Krista Lynn Leszczynski said Wednesday: “You had no business attending at the property of (that) high school. This type of conduct will not be tolerated.”

About Indian national Jagjit Singh in Canada

Canadian outlet Toronto Sun revealed that Singh does not speak English. On Wednesday, he pleaded not guilty to sexual interference in a Sarnia courtroom with the help of an interpreter. However, he did plead guilty to the lesser included offence of criminal harassment.

Singh has a ticket to return to India on December 30. According to a report by The Winnipeg Sun, the Indian national was trying to board an earlier flight home in light of the criminal development in Canada.

“Part of what makes this so difficult is that the offender was someone who had come to Canada as a newcomer,” one of the girls impacted by Singh’s actions wrote in a statement read by the prosecutor. “This betrayal has affected the way I see people of his culture and men who are older than me.”

Singh has since been hit with three years of probation, which bans him from talking to the two girls. He is not allowed to be where they live, work or go to school. Beyond his newborn grandchild, he has been barred from being around or talking to anyone under age 16. Moreover, Jagjit can’t be within 100 metres of any pool school, playground, park or community centre.
