Earlier this month, Harjinder Singh, a native of India, made contentious headlines for making a reckless, illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike, leading to three fatalities on the scene. A video of the truck driver believed to be responsible for the crash involving an 18-wheeler was eventually widely circulated on social media.
While the trucker himself was caught on camera a U-turn through “Official Use Only” access point in St Lucie County, a male passenger, said to be his brother, was also seen accompanying him at the time. The other man in the equation has now been identified as Harneet Singh.
Harjinder, on his part, is facing three counts of vehicular homicide and subsequent deportation. As per authorities, he entered the United States illegally through the Mexico border in 2018.
What we know about Harneet Singh – Indian truck driver’s brother also arrested
On the same page, his 25-year-old brother Harneet Singh was also arrested on August 18, 2025. However, the news particularly came to light this week, as the Department of Homeland Security pushed out a press release titled “ICE Arrests Illegal Alien Involved in Fatal 18-Wheeler Crash Caused by Illegal Alien’s Reckless Driving” on August 21 (US time).
Therein, officials confirmed that even Harneet Singh is an “illegal alien from India” like his brother. Though taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on August 18, Border Patrol encountered the 25-year-old on May 15, 2023. Nonetheless, he was “released into American communities by the Biden Administration,” as per the recent DHS press release.
Harneet will remain behind bars until his removal proceedings are completed. Charges against him remain unclear at this point.
Where does the case against Harjinder Singh stand?
Harjinder Singh, on the other hand, was arrested in Stockton, California, on Saturday. As of now, a federal immigration detainer has been issued in his name, potentially signalling deportation proceedings after the current criminal case in wrapped up.
After crossing the Mexico border in 2018 to come into the US, Harjinder obtained a Commercial Driver’s License in California. A recent New York Post report detailing his story indicated that the truck driver was on his path to getting his work documents cancelled under the first Donald Trump administration.
Despite a fast-track deportation being on his cards, Harjinder reportedly saved himself from removal by claiming he was scared to go back to India. At one point, he was even released from detention on a $5,000 immigration bond in January 2019.
Meanwhile, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin tweeted on X: “Harjinder Singh is in the United States illegally and his work authorization was rejected under the Trump Administration on September 14, 2020. It was later approved under the Biden Administration June 9, 2021.”
Both Sing brothers are said to have boarded a flight to California after the crash in Florida. As far as more recent updates on his case go, the semi-truck driver was extradited back to Florida from California this week.
