Billionaire investor George Soros skipped his son Alexander (Alex) Soros and Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin’s wedding on Saturday. Despite the 94-year-old Democrat donor’s absence at the nuptials, the event was crawling with significantly high-profile figures at the Soros family’s Hamptons estate, according to Page Six. The A-listers-packed wedding accorded guests, including Jimmy Fallon, Anna Wintour, Bill Gates’ son Rory, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff, Nancy Pelosi, Sen Chuck Schumer and Rep Hakeem Jeffries among others, with a warm welcome.

A day before sitting out on his son’s nuptials, the 94-year-old American philanthropist and his wife Tamiko Bolton “hosted an intimate family service on Friday morning at their home.” So, in a way, he didn’t fully miss out on Alex’s wedding extravaganza. Dismissing potential concerns tied to his old age, an insider spilled that the senior Soros is “94 years old and in good health.” And so, it remains unclear why the billionaire father-of-the-groom passed out on the opportunity to be at the main bash.

Who is George Soros?

The top Democrat donor is a Hungarian-born hedge-fund billionaire. According to Federal Election Commission records, he donated $175 million to the left-leaning politicians during the 2022 midterms. Come 2024, he emptied another $60 million from his pockets for House and Senate Democrats and causes through his Democracy PAC, which is a political action committee he uses to support the Dems.

According to a 2023 CNBC report, the Open Society Policy Center, a nonprofit funded by Soros, quietly donated $140 million to ballot initiatives and advocacy organisations in 2021. The Soros nonprofit additionally donated approximately $60 million to similar charities.

While George Soros’ personal donations have been going to two super PACs Democracy PAC and Democracy PAC II, it’s his 39-year-old son Alex who runs the groups. He also sits on the Open Society Institute and Open Society Policy Centre boards.

Earlier in 2025, the 94-year-old philanthropist received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian in the United States, alongside Hillary Clinton. Alex accepted the honour on behalf of his father.

The Open Society Foundations website calls him a “survivor of Nazi-occupied Hungry and then Communist repression.” Per their account, the Soros Sr has “contributed more than $32 billion to advancing freedom and justice across the world.”

In his efforts to champion education, he even founded the Central European University.

George Soros: A controversial saga

Beyond all the positives, the billionaire financier has often been shrouded in controversy as well. He famously earned $1 billion in a single day during the 1992 Black Wednesday Crisis by betting against the British pound. And so, the polarising man is also known as “The Man Who Broke the Bank of England.”

Given all the headlines surrounding his name, Tesla boss Elon Musk was among many to join the wave of severe online criticism, questioning former US President Joe Biden’s decision to award Soros the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

According to Forbes, the hedge-fund tycoon behind Soros Fund Management LLC currently has a net worth of $7.2 billion. After leaving Hungary at the age of 17, he earned his education at the London School of Economics while working as a railway porter and waiter. He subsequently secured a Masters of Science in Philosophy in 1954.

Last year, India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attempted to swear off bribery allegations against the Adana Group by linking Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi with Soros. At the time, BJP alleged the opposition leaders were colluding with the American businessman to destabilise India’s leadership.

The US billionaire’s Open Society does actually have an Indian connection as it started working in the South Asian country in 1999, handing out scholarships and fellowships to students.

Years ago, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also described Soros as an “old friend” in an X post. In light of the yesteryear controversy, he ultimately clarified, “He was a friend in the social sense: I have never received or solicited a penny from him or any of his foundations for myself or any institution or cause I supported.”

He added, “I only met Mr Soros once more after this tweet, and that was at the home of then-Ambassador and now-BJP Minister Hardeep Puri when I was visiting New York as MoS MEA (Minister of State for External Affairs). Amb Puri had invited a number of prominent Americans for a dinner discussion with me (and that was entirely appropriate).”
