Cloud9 has officially parted ways with Joseph “Mang0” Marquez after an internal review of his behaviour during Ludwig Ahgren’s recent Beerio Kart World Cup event. The decision depicts a significant shift in the Super Smash Bros. Melee scene, where Mang0 has long been regarded as one of the game’s most iconic and successful players.

The Beerio Kart World Cup, held on June 21, featured Ludwig and 23 other creators in a chaotic blend of Mario Kart races and alcohol-fueled antics, live-streamed for thousands of viewers. However, what was intended to be a fun, light-hearted stream quickly drew criticism after Mang0 was seen engaging in inappropriate physical behaviour toward several other streamers during the broadcast.

What is Mario Kart controversy?

Ludwig responded swiftly, publicly stating that Mang0 would no longer be welcome at any future events hosted by his company, Mogul Moves. This includes not only streamer-focused shows like Beerio Kart and World’s Greatest Gamer, but also some of the most prominent Super Smash Bros. tournaments in recent years, such as the Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series and Scuffed World Tour. “This can’t just be chalked up to him being a menace while drunk,” Ludwig said during a follow-up stream. “You can’t be cutesy about it. If someone’s presence jeopardizes others having a good time, that just can’t be allowed.”

While Ludwig didn’t issue a formal lifetime ban, his comments made it clear Mang0 won’t be invited back. According to Ludwig, Mang0 acknowledged his behaviour and agreed with the decision, taking full responsibility for his actions. Mang0 later issued a public apology on social media, referring to himself as a “drunk dumbass” and vowing to make amends with those affected. He admitted that alcohol has become a serious problem in his life and promised to quit drinking immediately.

“Everyone has coddled me for so long and looked the other way when it came to my drinking,” he wrote. “I don’t want anyone to feel bad for me or defend me… I know it just looks like I’m trying to save face, but I genuinely feel so awful about it. I will try and redeem myself over time as I always do.”

As of June 23, Cloud9 had not issued a public statement, but quietly removed Mang0 from their roster. No other tournament organisers or figures in the broader Melee or fighting game communities have announced disciplinary actions at this time. This incident is the latest in a string of controversies involving Mang0’s off-stage behaviour, which has increasingly cast a shadow over his competitive career.
