There seems to be no end in sight for the Trump administration’s deportation row. As international students, including Indians, face the growing restriction surrounding this issue, the US Embassy in India sounded an alarm against individuals on student visas potentially dropping out of their study programs.
US Embassy India (@USAndIndia on X) originally issued the fresh visa warning for foreign students on Tuesday morning (IST) via social media. The US Consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata eventually re-posted the tweet, calling for attention to the major announcement.
Student visa row: US Embassy’s warning to Indians and other foreign students
As per the latest update amid the ongoing immigration crackdown in the United States, Indian students (and others) have been warned against dropping out of their study program. Additionally, skipping classes or leaving the program without prior intimation may prompt punitive responses from the US government as well.
“If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future US visas,” the US Embassy posted on X. “Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues.”

Just days ago, the US Embassy notified the world that criminal conviction could lead to permanent ban from entering the United States. In an official statement released on May 22, officials said, “Even minor offences can trigger visa denials,” urging applicants to tell the truth on their application and in their interview. “Lying can get you banned,” the message concluded with a stern warning.
Similarly, another official word of caution warned Indian immigrants and others not to overstay their welcome in America, as it was equivalent to risking deportation. As a result, the message was especially concerned with those with employment permits of H-1B visas, F-1 study visas, and B-2 tourism visas.
“If you remain in the United States beyond your authorized period of stay, you could be deported and could face a permanent ban on traveling to the United States in the future,” the X post read.
Official word from India’s Ministry of External Affairs established that a total of 15,564 Indian nationals were deported by the US through chartered and commercial flights during the 2009-2024 time frame. In early April, MEA further revealed that 682 Indian nationals had been deported from the US since January 2025.
