An Indian man was arrested by US border officials on Tuesday after attempting to sneak into Canada. 22-year-old Vishat Kumar had illegally entered America in 2024 and remains wanted for murder in his home country. He had first garnered scrutiny after failing to attend an asylum interview. A secondary inspection found that he had concealed his identity — with bioletric technology revealing the truth.
Wanted for murder in India
“Kumar failed to attend an asylum interview, was found to be concealing his identity during a secondary inspection. Biometric technology confirmed his true identity, showing he had used a false name and date of birth. Further investigation revealed Kumar was wanted in India for murder” said an official release by US Customs and Border Protection.
US officials later confirmed that he had been using a fake name and date of birth in order to go undetected. Additional scrutiny revealed an Interpol Red Notice and the murder charges he faces in India. He was processed by US CPB officials after being caught and turned over to officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He remains detained at a facility in New York for removal proceedings from the United States.
What is an Interpol Red Notice?
According to the Interpol website, a Red Notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action. It is based on an arrest warrant or court order issued by the judicial authorities in the requesting country. Member countries apply their own laws in deciding whether to arrest a person.
