US President Donald Trump cancelled Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection, as reported by CNN. Under federal law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of protection after leaving office.
Harris’ coverage ended on July 21, but former president Joe Biden had quietly signed a directive before departing office that extended her security detail for another year.
The extension had not been publicly disclosed until now. Trump revoked that directive in a memo to the Secretary of Homeland Security dated Thursday, formally ending Harris’ additional Secret Service protection.
The letter reads, “You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
Doug Emhoff, former Vice President’s husband lost his own personal detail on July 21 under the standard provisions. As reported by CNN, sources familiar with Kamala Harris’ security detail said she faced heightened risks as both the first woman and the first Black woman to serve as vice president.
Those concerns increased once she became the nominee and remained elevated into January after the election, when tensions were still running high. Kirsten Allen, a Harris senior adviser, told CNN, “The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”
Secret Service protection involves continuous monitoring of threat intelligence and coverage of in-person interactions, emails, texts, and social media. With her detail now canceled, Harris’s aides worry they will lose access to those same threat alerts, according to people familiar with her security operations. Her Los Angeles residence, located in the heart of the city, will also no longer be guarded by federal agents.
