US President Donald Trump on Sunday congratulated the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia on a ceasefire agreed the previous day after weeks of border clashes that have killed dozens.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump also used the moment to reiterate his claim of mediating eight global conflicts over the past eight months, adding, “Perhaps the United States has become the REAL United Nations.”
According to Trump, his engagement convinced Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to agree to “cease all shooting” and return to an earlier peace accord.
Thailand and Cambodia sign ceasefire agreement
Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement on Saturday to end weeks of fighting over a long-standing border dispute.
“The United States of America, as always, was proud to help! With all of the wars and conflicts I have settled and stopped over the last eleven months, EIGHT, perhaps the United States has become the REAL United Nations, which has been of very little assistance or help in any of them, including the disaster currently going on between Russia and Ukraine,” the US President added.
US’ efforts to mediate in Thailand-Cambodia clash
Trump’s comments come amid a larger pattern of US efforts to mediate the conflict. Earlier in 2025, he helped oversee the signing of a ceasefire agreement at an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur, where both nations’ leaders, along with Malaysian PM, agreed to take steps toward ending hostilities. That accord included provisions such as the removal of heavy weapons and the release of captured soldiers.
Clashes between the two armies have seen artillery, rocket fire, and, in some cases, airstrikes along the nearly 817-kilometre shared border, reigniting violence after earlier truces.
Tens of thousands of civilians have been displaced, and both sides have blamed the other for breaking previous agreements.
Thai F-16 airstrikes on Cambodian positions, resulting in at least 32-38 deaths, including civilians and soldiers on both sides, over 100 injuries, and the displacement of more than 135,000-200,000 people.
