NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell broke his silence after Monday’s shooting tragedy at 345 Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan, which is home to the American football league’s headquarters. According to police, suspected gunman Shane Devon Tamura killed four people, including an NYPD officer, during his deadly rampage. An NYPD spokesperson previously told NBC News that six people, including the alleged shooter behind the fatal incident who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, had lost their lives.
However, now it seems that the fifth person to be shot on Monday has survived the attack. Meanwhile, the suspected gunman’s body was recovered from the 33rd floor of the high-rise building.
NFL employee injured after NYC shooting
One of the victims affected in the process appears to have been an NFL employee. As per ESPN and Fox News’ coverage, Goodell revealed in his message that one of NFL employees was left “seriously injured” due to the shooting attack. Although their identity wasn’t disclosed in the statement, the NFL commissioner said that the staffer was in hospital in a stable condition.
“As has been widely reported, a gunman committed an unspeakable act of violence in our building at 345 Park Avenue. One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack,” read the NFL boss’ message. “He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family.”
Additionally, he informed that all other NFL employee were otherwise “safe and accounted for,” with the building being nearly cleared out. He went on to express how grateful he was to the law enforcement officers who quickly helped in mitigating the threat. NYPD’s Didarul Islam, who lost his life during the Monday attack, also earned a mention in the NFL commissioner’s statement.
NYC mass shooting suspect’s motive still under investigation
During a Monday night press conference, NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch disclosed that the suspected NYC shooter was a Las Vegas native and had a history of mental health problems. Shane Tamura is said to have been carrying a massive M4 assault rifle with him as he stormed into the NYC building that hosts several notable businesses, including the private-equity firm Blackstone.
A motive spurring the shooting spree has yet to be determined. Social media particularly erupted with speculations that Tamura, who was a former football player in high school, may have launched his onslaught due to a potential NFL link, or the lack thereof. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department is examining whether he had any connections to the agency.
