Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has publicly criticised President Donald Trump for ordering airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites without seeking congressional authorisation. During an appearance on CNN, Massie labeled the strikes as unconstitutional and claimed that Congress had not been briefed, nor was there an imminent threat that would justify bypassing legislative approval.
Who is Thomas Massie?
Massie, a Kentucky native, has represented the state’s 4th Congressional District since 2012. The district covers Northern Kentucky and stretches 280 miles along the Ohio River. Before entering politics, Massie earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from MIT, where he developed haptic technology, a groundbreaking system that enables users to “feel” digital environments. His work has been applied in industries ranging from automotive design to reconstructive surgery for injured soldiers. Although Massie aligns with several MAGA-era policies, he is known for his staunch opposition to presidential overreach, unchecked war powers, and excessive government spending.
Trump fires back on Truth Social
President Trump fired back at Massie via Truth Social, labeling the Kentucky lawmaker a “third-rate Congressman” and accusing him of being “very bad for the Constitution.” In his lengthy post, Trump slammed Massie for opposing what he called the “GREAT, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL,” which includes sweeping tax cuts, military funding, and a series of other conservative priorities. “Why would anyone want to vote for a so-called ‘Congressman,’ a RINO at best, who wants to raise your Taxes by 68 percent… He votes, ‘NO!’ on everything, because he thinks it makes him cool, but he’s not cool, he’s a LOSER!” Trump posted on Tuesday.

Massie endorsed Trump in the 2024 race, citing his desire to prevent “needless wars abroad,” but tensions between the two have been simmering for months. Last month, Massie was one of only two Republicans to vote against Trump’s tax legislation. His recent vocal opposition to the Iran strikes marks another significant rift between the two. Despite his criticism, Massie appeared to waver earlier this week. In an interview with Punchbowl News, he said he may “hold off” on voting for the War Powers Resolution depending on how the situation unfolds. “If there’s no hostilities, the resolution is to withdraw or end hostilities,” he noted.
Just hours after suggesting a delay on the resolution, Massie reappeared on MSNBC, reiterating concerns that Trump has abandoned key campaign promises. “I’m worried that the first six months of Trump’s second term have already sort of gone astray of what was one of the basic principles of putting America first,” he said.
‘Why is Massie appearing to oppose what 90% of Americans want’
On internet, MAGA supporters slammed Massie. A user noted, “Why is Massie appearing to oppose what 90% of Americans want, and what every President throughout History has done using the War Powers Act?.” “I think he’s a Democrat that works from the inside,” added another user. “Maybe Republicans should stop worrying about their re-elections and worry about America!,” said a netizen. “It is just what Massie wants! What a traitor to us and his constituents! Mr. No despite what We The People want,” added another. “Thomas Massie needs to give up his day job. Resign or get voted out,” added another.
