The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested an Indian national identified as “Anmol”, who was allegedly living illegally in the United States. The arrested man was holding a New York state commercial driver’s license (CDL) bearing the name “NO NAME GIVEN Anmol”.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ICE officers encountered Anmol during a routine truck inspection at a weigh station on Interstate 40 in Oklahoma last month. He was arrested and removal proceedings began after investigation found his residence status as illegal.

Anmol carried a Class A license, issued in April 2024 and valid until May 2028. The document also bore a ‘REAL ID’ star, meaning it met federal identification standards.

DHS slams New York City’s authorities

A Homeland Security press release dated October 10 stated that Anmol entered the US illegally in 2023 and “was released by the Biden administration into the country”. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said, “Allowing illegal aliens to obtain commercial driver’s licenses to operate 18-wheelers and transport hazardous materials on America’s roads is reckless and incredibly dangerous.”

McLaughlin also criticised New York’s licensing process. She claimed that the state “is failing to verify applicants’ citizenship or even record their full legal names”. DHS said it is now coordinating with state and local partners to prevent undocumented drivers from operating commercial vehicles.

‘Undocumented’ CDL holders in US

The incident follows growing national scrutiny over undocumented immigrants holding CDLs. Just two months ago, Harjinder Singh, another Indian national illegally residing in the US, was charged with three counts of vehicular homicide after a fatal crash in Florida.

Authorities said Singh held a California CDL despite failing basic traffic law and English proficiency tests.

DMV responds

However, the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) disputed ICE’s claims regarding Anmol’s immigration status. According to a Fox News report, a DMV official said that the licence holder possesses lawful status through a federal employment authorisation issued in March 2024.

The department maintained that the licence was issued “in full compliance with federal guidelines” and that “it is not uncommon for individuals from other countries to have only one name”.

Anmol remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
