Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old history-making Indian-origin US assemblyman, is all set to be inaugurated into office in the New Year. To celebrate the momentous occasion, the New York City mayor-elect is hosting a free, public block party along Broadway near City Hall on Thursday, January 1, 2026.

The changing of the guard involving Mamdani’s inauguration as the city mayor will inevitably be centred around a swearing-in ceremony at City Hall. But once that’s done, the whole political affair will embrace the festive spirit of the New Year as music and performances take over Broadway along the famed Canyon of Heroes.

“This inauguration is a celebration of the movement we built, the mandate we won, and the city we are prepared to lead,” said Mamdani. “Working New Yorkers are at the heart of our agenda and we invite them to join us as we welcome this new era of politics to City Hall.”

The joint ceremony will also focus on Comptroller-elect Mark Levine and reelected Public Advocate Jumaane Williams being sworn in.
