Pahalgam Terror Attack: The United States government has strongly criticised The New York Times for its coverage of the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people, including tourists, were brutally killed.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee Majority called out the publication on X (formerly Twitter) for referring to the perpetrators as “militants” instead of “terrorists.”

In a direct post on X, the committee wrote, “Hey, @nytimes we fixed it for you. This was a TERRORIST ATTACK plain and simple. Whether it’s India or Israel, when it comes to TERRORISM the NYT is removed from reality.” The post included a screenshot of the NYT headline, “At least 24 tourists gunned down by militants in Kashmir,” with the word “militants” boldly replaced with “terrorists” in red.

US State Department affirms support for India

The criticism from the committee was echoed by the US Department of State. Spokesperson Tammy Bruce reiterated America’s condemnation of terrorism and expressed solidarity with India. “As President Trump and Secretary Rubio have made clear, the United States stands with India, strongly condemns all acts of terrorism,” Bruce said. “We pray for the lives of those lost and for the recovery of the injured, and call for the perpetrators of this heinous crime to be brought to justice.”

When asked about India blaming Pakistan for the Pahalgam attack, Bruce clarified that the US is closely monitoring the situation but is not taking a position on the territorial status of Kashmir or Jammu. “It is a rapidly changing situation and we are monitoring it closely,” she said, emphasizing neutrality on the geopolitical dispute.

US officials and political leaders have consistently maintained that terminology matters, especially in combating global terrorism.
