Barack Obama during his remarks at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Tuesday (August 21) praised US President Joe Biden, saying that “history will remember Joe Biden as an outstanding president who defended democracy at a moment of danger,” prompting applause from the crowd. “I am proud to call him my president, but I am even prouder to call him my friend,” Obama said.
Obama, one of the most influential figures in the Democratic Party, praised President Biden’s legacy before extending his steadfast support to Vice President Kamala Harris. The Former President said that “America’s ready for a new chapter” and that “Kamala Harris is ready for the job.”
‘Tight race in a closely divided country’
At the event Obama cautioned voters that despite the significant energy generated over the past few weeks, including rallies and memes, the race remains tight in a closely divided country.
Furthermore, he repeatedly criticised former President Trump, portraying the Republican nominee as driven by self-interest and a threat to the nation. “Donald Trump sees power as nothing more than a means to his ends,” he said. “We have seen that movie before, and we all know that the sequel is usually worse.”
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris energised thousands of voters in a packed arena at another venue. Harris, 59, is set to formally accept the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination on Thursday, preparing to face Republican rival Donald Trump, 78, in the election on November 5.
Hope is making a comeback, says Michelle Obama
Former First Lady Michelle Obama has declared that hope is returning to America, as she passionately endorsed Kamala Harris, calling her the most qualified candidate ever to run for U.S. president. “America, hope is making a comeback,” Michelle Obama stated, receiving an enthusiastic reception from thousands of Democratic leaders and supporters at the national convention.
“Kamala Harris is more than ready for this moment. She is one of the most qualified people ever to seek the office of the presidency. And she is one of the most dignified tributes to her mother, to my mother, and probably to your mother too,” she said.
Michelle added that “Her story is our story; it’s the story of the vast majority of Americans striving for a better life. Kamala understands, as we do, that no matter where you come from, what you look like, who you love, who you worship, or what’s in your bank account, everyone deserves the chance to build a respectable life. Every contribution deserves recognition and value because no one has a monopoly on what it means to be an American. No one.”
