US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he had a highly productive conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The two leaders are set to meet following Canada’s upcoming election, scheduled for April 28. This development comes at a time of heightened tensions between the neighboring countries.
“It was an extremely productive call; we agree on many things and will be meeting immediately after Canada’s upcoming election to work on elements of politics, business, and all other factors,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. He added that the collaboration would prove beneficial for both nations.
As of now, Carney and his office have not issued a statement regarding the call. The conversation took place just a day after Carney vowed to reshape Canada’s economy to reduce its reliance on the United States. This comes ahead of Trump’s anticipated tariff announcement on April 2, adding another layer of complexity to their diplomatic relations.
Strained relations
Historically, the United States and Canada have maintained a close partnership, marked by strong trade ties. However, relations have been strained since Trump took office in January, with repeated tariff threats and remarks suggesting Canada could become the 51st US state.
Canada snap election
Mark Carney, who assumed office in mid-March, called for a snap election on April 28. The outcome could significantly influence the future of US-Canada relations. Both leaders have expressed optimism about working together despite recent tensions.
