On Tuesday, the United Nations Security Council is likely to vote on an Algerian push for the 15-member body to demand an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, said diplomats, a move the USA signaled it would veto.
More than two weeks ago, Algeria put forward an initial draft resolution.
On Saturday, Algeria requested that the council vote on Tuesday, said diplomats.
To be adopted, U.N. Security Council resolution requires at least nine votes in favour. Also, there should be no vetoes by the USA, UK, France, China or Russia.
From U.N. action, Washington traditionally shields its ally Israel. Already, it has twice vetoed council action since Oct. 7.
Discussions between the USA, Egypt, Israel, and Qatar are on to seek a pause in the war and the freedom of hostages held by Hamas.
The Gaza war started when fighters from the Hamas militant group that runs Gaza attacked Israel on Oct. 7. This led to the killing of 1,200 people. 253 hostages were captured. In revenge, Israel launched a military attack on Gaza that health authorities say has killed more than 28,000 Palestinians with thousands more bodies feared lost amid the ruins.
