Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized Ukraine’s dependence on Western military and financial aid, warning that the country would collapse within a week without such support. This assertion coincided with concerns raised by a European Union official about the potential inability of the EU to fill the funding gap if the United States reduces its assistance to Kyiv.

During a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club, Putin stated that Ukraine’s stability relied on “multi-billion donations that come each month,” and if this aid were to cease, the nation’s survival would be severely compromised, reported news agency ANI. He highlighted the vulnerability of Ukraine’s defense system, emphasizing that it would only last a week without ammunition in the absence of aid.

Additionally, Putin pointed out that Ukraine had suffered significant casualties, with over 90,000 troops lost since its counteroffensive against Russian forces began.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell echoed concerns about the EU’s inability to replace the United States as Kyiv’s primary donor during a meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) in Spain, ANI reported. He emphasized that Europe could not fill the void left by the US and underscored the critical role of both the EU and the US, including NATO members, in Ukraine’s struggle against Russia.

US Political Developments Create Uncertainty for Ukraine Aid

Over time, the EU and its member states had pledged over USD 100 billion in aid to Ukraine, including support for weapon deliveries, while the US had committed USD 43 billion in military assistance, with Congress approving USD 113 billion, including humanitarian aid. However, ongoing political developments in the US, such as a weekend deal with opposition Republicans and changes in congressional leadership, have created uncertainty regarding the future of US funding for Ukraine.

In response to these concerns, President Joe Biden assured that the US would not abandon its support for Ukraine and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining assistance. Some factions within the US, however, advocate for the cessation of aid to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed concerns about Washington’s political challenges but remained confident in bipartisan support for his country during a meeting with European leaders. French President Emmanuel Macron also pledged unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing his commitment to assisting the nation.
