A tsunami wave around one metre high (3.3 feet) struck parts of the west coast along the Sea of Japan, with a larger wave expected, public broadcaster NHK reported Monday. A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck north-central Japan earlier today, following which, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the western coastal regions of Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures.

The weather agency has predicted potential tsunami waves of up to 5 meters high heading towards Noto in Ishikawa Prefecture.

Reports from NHK state that waves exceeding one meter in height have already reached the coast of Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture.

NHK also mentioned that Hokuriku Electric Power is currently conducting checks for any irregularities at its nuclear power plants in response to the earthquake.

This is a developing story.
