The US citizens have picked Donald Trump to be their 47th President. He will be the first former president in over 130 years to return to office and, at 78, will also be the oldest person ever elected to the role.

The race with Democrat Kamala Harris was expected to be extremely close, but overnight results revealed that Trump had secured enough votes to claim victory.

Trump is now the President-elect of the US. His opponent, Kamala Harris, has already conceded and world leaders have extended their wishes.

However, the official presidential election results are not yet confirmed. It could still take days or even weeks for the detailed election results to be officially confirmed in each state.

Once every valid vote is included in the final tally, the election result is confirmed through a process known as the Electoral College.
