A small plane crashed near a major interstate highway in south Florida on Friday morning — less than a day after a fatal helicopter crash in New York City. It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were on the plane and whether there are any survivors.
Local media reports indicate the plane was on fire with a large plume of smoke as firefighters rushed to respond. The Boca Raton Police said in a social media post that several roads near the Boca Raton Airport were closed near Interstate 95.
The incident comes less than a day after a New York City sightseeing helicopter broke apart in midair and crashed upside-down into the Hudson River. The pilot and all passengers were killed in the accident with witnesses saying that they had seen the chopper “falling apart” in midair — with the tail and main rotor coming off. Video of the crash also showed parts of the aircraft tumbling through the air into the water near the shoreline of Jersey City.
