A powerful earthquake struck a mountainous region in western China near the Nepal border on Tuesday morning, claiming at least 36 lives, according to state media. Reuters reported that the quake resulted in 32 fatalities and left 38 others injured in Tibet. State broadcaster CCTV, citing the Ministry of Emergency Management, confirmed the death toll but did not provide additional details about the casualties.

The magnitude 7.1 earthquake, recorded by the US Geological Survey, struck the Tibet region at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles). China’s earthquake monitoring agency, however, registered the quake’s magnitude as 6.8. CCTV noted that the area around the epicenter sits at an average altitude of 4,200 meters (13,800 feet).
