A huge explosion ripped through an explosives factory in Tennessee on Friday morning, leaving 19 people dead or missing. The blast, described as a “mass detonation,” was so powerful that homes miles away shook and debris was scattered over half a square mile.
The explosion occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems, a company that makes military and demolition explosives. The site, located about an hour southwest of Nashville, now lies in ruins, with burned vehicles and twisted metal spread across the area. The facility employs around 80 people, though it’s unclear how many were inside when the explosion happened, according to a CNN report.
Authorities confirm missing workers
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis told CNN that the situation remains critical as authorities continue to search for those unaccounted for. “We’re missing 19 souls, the exact number of deaths cannot yet be confirmed. I always wish for the best,” he said.
Investigators from several agencies, including the FBI, are working to determine the cause of the blast. Sheriff Davis said the investigation could take several days.
Families and community in shock
The tragedy has deeply affected the small communities in Hickman and Humphreys counties. Davis said he personally knows several families involved.
Three people with minor injuries were taken to TriStar Health facilities in Dickson. Two have been released, while one remains in the emergency room for treatment. Officials confirmed that the site was secured by late morning after smaller secondary explosions occurred following the initial blast, as per the report.
Company calls it a ‘tragic accident’
Accurate Energetic Systems described the explosion as a “tragic accident” in a statement Friday evening. The company produces explosives for the US Department of Defense and industrial use. Just last month, it was awarded a $120 million contract by the Pentagon for TNT production.
Federal agents, the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Special Operations Unit, and several local law enforcement teams have joined the rescue and investigation efforts. Residents are being urged to stay away from the area as emergency crews continue their work.
