Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s efforts to resolve the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasising that India’s position is not neutral but aligned with peace.

During a joint press conference with Trump on Thursday, Modi reiterated that diplomatic negotiations, not war, would lead to a lasting solution. He recalled his widely quoted remark “this is not an era of war” which he had made in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Addressing misconceptions about India’s stance, PM Modi made it clear that his country has always been in close contact with both Russia and Ukraine and remains committed to facilitating a peaceful resolution.

“Many believe India is neutral in this conflict, but I want to clarify that India is not neutral. We are on a side, and that side is peace,” PM Modi said.

“War cannot provide solutions. Ultimately, we need to sit down and talk,” Modi further stated. “I appreciate and support the efforts made by President Trump and hope that he succeeds in bringing peace soon,” the PM said.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict was a key discussion point in Modi and Trump’s bilateral meeting earlier in the day. Modi acknowledged Trump’s active engagement with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, describing it as a positive step toward peace.

“President Trump has taken commendable steps, reaching out to both President Putin and President Zelenskyy. I have been calling for dialogue and diplomacy since day one…We have always advocated for peace and negotiation,” Modi said.
