Iran-backed militants in Western Iraq recently launched a barrage of rockets and ballistic missiles at Washington’s al-Assad Airbase, resulting in injuries to several US personnel. The attack occurred on Saturday and prompted a response from the US Central Command (CENTCOM).

CENTCOM revealed that multiple US personnel are currently undergoing evaluation for “traumatic brain injuries” as a result of the attack. Additionally, at least one Iraqi service member sustained injuries during the assault.

Missile Interceptions and Damage Assessment

The attack took place at approximately 6:30 pm (Baghdad time) on January 20, with the majority of the launched missiles intercepted by the air defense systems at al-Assad Airbase. However, some missiles impacted the base, and ongoing assessments are being conducted to determine the extent of the damage.

US Conducts Airstrikes Against Houthi Anti-Ship Missile

On the same day, the US Central Command reported conducting airstrikes against a Houthi anti-ship missile aimed at the Gulf of Aden. The decision to strike the missile was justified as a self-defense measure to protect merchant vessels and US Navy ships in the region.

US Preemptive Actions Amid Rising Tensions in Red Sea

This marked the fourth preemptive action taken by the US military in response to escalating tensions in the Red Sea. Recent attacks targeted Houthi rebels in Yemen, resulting in the destruction of three anti-ship missiles in the Red Sea.

Redesignation of Yemeni Group as a “Terrorist” Organization

The White House confirmed the US redesignation of the Houthi rebels as a “terrorist” organization due to their continued attacks and threats to shipping. Sanctions were imposed on the group, with the designation set to take effect in 30 days.

Houthi Response and Impact on Trade Routes

The Houthis, undeterred by the “terrorist” designation, declared that it would not affect their operations to prevent Israeli ships or vessels heading to Israel from crossing the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. The Houthis’ attacks, initiated in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza, have disrupted trade routes between Asia and Europe, causing concern among major world powers.
