The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that it had killed a senior Hezbollah commander in a strike on Beirut. This attack comes just a day after the anniversary of the October 7 assault, which has been marked by mourning and demonstrations worldwide, reports the Associated Press.
According to the military, the strike eliminated Suhail Husseini, who was said to oversee logistics, budget, and management within the militant organization. While there was no immediate response from Hezbollah, the Israeli military reported that Husseini played a significant role in transferring advanced weapons from Iran to various Hezbollah units and was a member of the group’s military council.
In recent weeks, Israeli strikes have reportedly killed several high-ranking Hezbollah officials, including the group’s overall leader, Hassan Nasrallah. Last week, Israel also launched what it described as a limited ground incursion into southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah, on its part, claims to have replaced its slain commanders and has vowed to continue firing rockets, missiles, and drones into Israel until a ceasefire is achieved in the Gaza Strip, where its ally Hamas has been engaged in ongoing conflict with Israel for the past year.
In a separate but related development, Palestinian militants in Gaza fired a barrage of rockets into Israel on Monday, highlighting their resilience amid a devastating Israeli offensive that has reportedly claimed the lives of approximately 42,000 Palestinians, according to local medical officials. The offensive has also led to widespread destruction and the displacement of about 90 per cent of Gaza’s population.
One year ago, Hamas-led militants breached Israel’s security fence, launching an assault that resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people, primarily civilians, and the abduction of 250 individuals, with about 100 still believed to be held captive in Gaza.
Currently, Israel is engaged in a war with both Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, which began firing rockets into Israel on October 8, 2023. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon on Monday resulted in the deaths of at least 10 firefighters, further escalating tensions in the region. Despite its recent losses, Hezbollah has continued its barrage of attacks against Israel.
