Maine police has identified the person behind the mass shooting in the city of Lewiston and surrounding areas that resulted in around 22 deaths and more than 60 people with fatal injuries. The prime suspect has been identified as one Robert R Card, a 40 year old trained firearms instructor, as reported by several news agencies. An army reservist, he was treated for hullicinations earlier this year.

After an intense investigation by Maine Public Safety, Commissioner Mike Sauschuck told in a news conference, “We have literally hundreds of police officers working around the state of Maine to investigate this case to locate Mr. Card, who is a person of interest.” The police yet to discover the motive behind the series of violation.

As per the official statement from the Maine Information & Analysis Center, the accused has been a patient of mental issues, “Card was also reported to have been committed to mental health facility for two weeks during summer 2023 and subsequently released.” According to a report by New York Post, Card had been ‘hearing voices” and also thereatened to open fire in National Guard Base where he was stationed. Although Card’s profile and background is yet to be confirmed by the authorities but it has been reported that he shares a history with Boutin, Maine.

The shooting would be the deadliest in the US since at least August 2019, when a gunman opened fire on customers at an El Paso Walmart with an AK-47 rifle, killing 23 people in what prosecutors described as an anti-Hispanic hate crime, according to the Gun Violence Archive. If the death toll of 22 is confirmed.
