An Indian man was brutally attacked by a group of teenagers in Dublin, Ireland while he was going through a park. According to a report that cited the victim, he was punched, kicked and beaten by the teens. One of them also hit him with his metal bottle, leaving him with a deep injury above his eye.
The violent incident, fourth in a month, has left the migrant community in shock despite Irish President Michael D Higgins condemning the violence as “despicable”.
What is the incident?
A report in The Journal mentioned the victim was walking home from Fairview Park when the teenagers attacked him on Sunday. “I was walking home from the park when one of the group, while riding an electric scooter, kicked me in the stomach. As I tried to walk away, two others joined in the attack and started hitting me. I then fell to the ground and they continued to kick and punch me. One of them took his metal water bottle and hit me above the eye,” he said, quoted the report.
He suffered severe injuries leading to eight stitches. He told the news outlet he has begun preparing to leave Ireland. President Michael D. Higgins condemned the recent attacks, and called them “despicable”. He also expressed a “deep sense of gratitude” to the Indian community, saying, “Their presence, their work, their culture have been a source of enrichment and generosity to our shared life.”
“We are all mindful of the immense contribution this community has made, and continues to make, to so many aspects of Irish life. The recent attacks damage and corrode the most fundamental and enduring instincts of Irishness: those of hospitality, friendship, and care for others,” he added.
Other incidents against Indian community members
The Dublin incident is not the isolated one as for the past month, similar cases of racist attack have been reported from Ireland where members of the Indian community have been targeted. A gang recently attacked an Indian man in the nearby suburb of Clondalkin, hitting him in the face, chest, back and legs.
According to The Guardian, the man was left with a fracture, gashes and multiple bruises. A few days later, the report said, two male passengers struck an Indian taxi driver with a bottle and shouted, “Go back to your country.”
Then again, some boys in a County Waterford allegedly punched a six-year-old girl in the face, hit her in the genital area with a bicycle and told her to “go back to India”.
Indians recently held a silent protest outside the justice department. Meanwhile, the Indian embassy in Dublin has urged its citizens to take security precautions and avoid deserted areas.
