Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sister, Uzma Khanum, visited him at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Tuesday after weeks of restricted access. She later told reporters that Khan appeared “completely fine” but was being “mentally tortured’ behind bars. The access came after weeks of restrictions that had sparked protests and rumours about his condition.

Uzma entered the jail while several PTI supporters gathered outside, calling for clarity on Imran’s health. Uzma said Khan was kept in his room all day, allowed only a short time outside and had no communication with anyone. Their meeting lasted around 30 minutes, according to a report by Dawn.

After the meeting, PTI USA shared her statement, quoting her saying, “Imran Khan’s health is perfectly fine. However, he said that they are subjecting him to mental torture, and that Asim Munir is responsible for all of this.”

Imran Khan accuses General Asim Munir

However, sources told CNN-News 18 that Imran Khan accused Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, of being responsible for the “mental torture” he is facing in jail.

Speaking after the meeting, Uzma said Imran Khan was upset about some jail administration issues, but she said his “morale remained high.” Khanum said Khan was mentally strong and had sent a message for his party leadership and what he called an “undemocratic regime,” as per the CNN report.

Her visit came as the PTI held protests outside both the Islamabad High Court and Adiala Jail despite Section 144 being in place. The protestors accused authorities of placing illegal restrictions on Imran Khan’s visitation rights. The family and the party had earlier said that even though courts allowed two visits a week, access had been blocked for several weeks.

This meeting also happened during a time of increased tension, including a contempt petition filed by Imran’s other sister, Aleema Khan, against jail officials for allegedly ignoring court orders that allowed family and lawyers to meet him.

PTI shares Imran Khan’s message

After the meeting, PTI released a detailed statement on Monday saying the former prime minister has been “arbitrarily detained” for 850 days and is being kept in “inhumane” conditions.
