Protests broke out at various locations across Bangladesh on Sunday as the Inqilab Moncho demanded justice for the murder of founder Sharif Osman Bin Hadi.

‘Today Shahbagh, tomorrow Jamuna’

The Inqilab Moncho led massive blockades across Bangladesh on Sunday — demanding justice for Hadi during sit-in protests within Dhaka, Sylhet, Chattogram and Kushtia. Group Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber also warned that the agitation would intensify if he government failed to act.

“Today we are in Shahbagh. Tomorrow we may occupy Jamuna (the chief adviser’s residence), the parliament or even the cantonment. If you think you can control the country from inside the secretariat or the cantonment, you are wrong. On December 12, the day of Hadi’s namaz-e-janaza, if we wanted, we could have toppled the government. Your Jamuna or cantonment couldn’t have saved you,” The Daily Star quoted him as saying.

Hadi murder suspects arrested in Meghalaya

Bangladeshi newspapers indicated on Sunday that the Meghalaya Police had arrested two people who helped the primary suspects flee to India. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police claimed Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh had crossed the border to enter the neighbouring country with help from associates.  Additional Police Commissioner SN Md Nazrul Islam said the suspects had entered through the Haluaghat border.

“After crossing, they were initially received by an individual named Purti. Later, a taxi driver named Sami transported them to Tura city in Meghalaya…We are maintaining communication with Indian authorities through both formal and informal channels to ensure their arrest and extradition,” The Daily Star quoted him as saying during a press conference.

Indian authorities have not confirmed the DMP claim about two suspects crossing the border to escape into India. The state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha also cited Islam to add that their probe into the Hadi murder was “nearing completion”. The charge sheet is expected to be submitted within the next seven to ten days and at least 11 people have been arrested in connection with the killing.
