Top Russian security official Dmitry Medvedev stoked “World War III” concerns on Tuesday amid a growing rift with US President Donald Trump. The remarks came hours after the POTUS accused Moscow of ‘playing with fire’ over Ukraine and warned that “really bad things” could happen to the country . Trump had also dubbed President Vladimir Putin “absolutely crazy” earlier this week after Russia launched its largest airstrike against Ukraine.
“Regarding Trump’s words about Putin “playing with fire” and “really bad things” happening to Russia. I only know of one REALLY BAD thing — WWIII. I hope Trump understands this!” the former Russian President wrote on X.
The comment drew sharp rebuke from US officials — with Trump envoy Keith Kellogg scolding Medvedev for making a “reckless comment” and reiterating calls for an immediate ceasefire.
“What Vladimir Putin doesn’t realize is that if it weren’t for me, lots of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean REALLY BAD. He’s playing with fire!” the POTUS had warned on Tuesday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded by reiterating that national interest was paramount for the Russian leader. He also said in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday that a possible meeting of Putin with Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy should take place only following preparations and talks.
