A crown belonging to Goddess Kali has been stolen from Bangladesh’s Jeshoreshwari Temple in Shyamnagar, Satkhira. The crown, which was gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the temple in March 2021, was reported missing, according to The Daily Star.
The theft took place on Thursday between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm, shortly after Temple Priest Dilip Mukherjee had left following the day’s worship. It was the cleaning staff who discovered that the crown was no longer on the deity’s head, as reported by The Daily Star.
“We are reviewing the temple’s CCTV footage to identify the thief,” said Inspector Taizul Islam of Shyamnagar Police Station. The stolen crown, crafted from silver and gold-plated, carries immense cultural and religious significance. In Hindu mythology, the Jeshoreshwari Temple is recognized as one of the 51 Shakti Peeths located throughout India and its neighboring countries.
The name “Jeshoreshwari” translates to “Goddess of Jeshore”. Prime Minister Modi visited the Jeshoreshwari Temple on March 27, 2021, during his trip to Bangladesh. During his visit, he placed the crown on the deity’s head as a symbolic gesture.
PM Modi also shared a video of his visit to the temple, marking it as his first trip to any country after the COVID-19 pandemic.
