The New South Wales (NSW) Police have asked residents to shelter in place and avoid heading towards the beach. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, multiple people were seen lying on the ground, with emergency services responding to the scene.

Australian PM Anthony Albanese reacted to the mass shooting at Bondi Beach and called the scenes “shocking and distressing” noting that police and emergency responders were on the ground working to save lives, Reuters reported.
He said his thoughts were with everyone affected and confirmed that he had spoken with the New South Wales premier. He added that authorities were working closely with NSW Police and would provide further updates as more information was confirmed, urging people in the area to follow advice from NSW Police.
In his latest press briefing, he also confirmed that the shooting is a ‘devastating terrorist attack’, adding that the Australian government’s support lied with the Jewish community.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said 29 people were injured in what he formally declared a “terrorist incident”. He said those hospitalised were in conditions ranging “from serious to critical”. The attack occurred at around 6:47 pm local time near the Bondi Pavilion during a Hanukkah event attended by more than 1,000 people, Lanyon said.
Police also revealed they had located an explosive device linked to the attackers. “We have found an improvised explosive device in a car which is linked to the deceased offender,” Lanyon said.
“Our counter-terrorism command will lead this investigation with investigators from the State Crime Command,” Lanyon said. This type of disgraceful activity, this wanton use of violence, the taking of innocent lives is unacceptable to New South Wales,” he said. “It’s not our way of life. Allow the police to do our job. We will work closely with the community, and I’ll continue to provide updates about the investigation as they go on,” Lanyon added.
