Operation Sindoor: Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan – Asim Munir, who said that Kashmir was and will be their “jugular vein” before the dastardly terror attack in the Valley, has not given any statement after India launched Operation Sindoor. According to reports, he had earlier said that Pakistan would respond with “full military might” if needed as tensions escalated between the two nuclear states following the April 22 attack.

After Pakistan launched drone attacks on the intervening night of 8 and 9, the Indian Army intercepted them all and gave a “befitting” reply. Shortly after, a false claim went viral that he had been captured by Indian armed forces. Another alleged that he has died. Amid this, a video of Munir boosting the morale of his armed forces has been doing the rounds on social media.

What does the viral video show?

The video shows Munir standing with the personnel of the armed forces as he raises their spirits.

“You are fighting the war of the state, Allah is with you. You are fighting in the cause of Allah…,” he was heard saying in a now-viral pixelated video.

“Allah ne hukum diya hua hai…,” he added, before reciting verses from the Quran.

He went on to say, “Whoever fights against Allah and His Messenger and spreads corruption on the earth will be punished in this world, and in the Hereafter, they will face an even harsher punishment,” apparently to boost the morale of his armed forces.

Who is Asim Munir?

General Asim Munir was appointed as Pakistan’s 11th Chief of Army Staff in November 2022 by the country’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He was a Lieutenant General back then and had replaced General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who served as COAS for six years, to get the post.

Munir was appointed as the Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in 2019 under the Imran Khan government and was heading the agency during the 2019 Pulwama attack that resulted in the death of 40 CRPF personnel. However, his brief ISI stint came to an end abruptly. While Munir alleged that he was removed as he exposed the corruption of Bushra Bibi, wife of Imran Khan, Khan maintained that neither his wife was involved in corruption, nor was he removed because of that, tagging his allegations as “completely false”.

It is important to note that his appointment to the top army post came when the Pakistan military was trying to oust then-PM Imran Khan.

Munir is in his 50s and has three children with Syeda Irum Asim.
