The US government has recently come down heavily on Russia and its President Vladimir Putin for their changing position on the Ukraine peace deal. President Donald Trump has time and again praised Putin, calling him “genius”, “savvy”, among other things.

However, Trump disclosed last week that First Lady Melania Trump had influenced his opinions about the Russian head of state. During a White House meeting, Trump said that his wife provided a harshly critical response to his previous perceptions of the Kremlin leader and his war in Ukraine.

In a recent meeting with Nato secretary general, Mark Rutte in the white house, Donald Trump credited his wife for playing a key role in pointing out Vladimir Putin’s duplicity.

“My conversations with him [Putin] are always very pleasant. I say, isn’t that a very lovely conversation? And then the missiles go off that night,” Trump said.

He added, “I go home, I tell the first lady: I spoke with Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation. She said: Really? Another city was just hit.”

Melania Trump, a native of Slovenia, has consistently shown more overt support for Ukraine than her husband, who publicly labeled Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “dictator” in February.

After Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, she urged her social media followers to donate to the Red Cross, expressing her distress over the “heartbreaking and horrific” suffering of innocent people.

This perceived pro-Ukraine stance even led one social media user to share memes. One user depicted her as “Agent Melania Trumpenko”, suggesting she’s covertly aiding Kyiv within the White House.
