Two Indian students were reportedly killed in a US car accident last week. The deceased were identified as Manav Patel, 20, and Saurav Prabhakar, 23. Both students from Cleveland State University succumbed to a single-vehicle accident in Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County on Saturday, May 10.

According to NBC affiliate WGAL, Saurav Prabhakar was driving the vehicle with Manav Patel as the passenger. Both men from Cleveland, Ohio, were pronounced dead at the scene. The Lancaster County coroner ruled their tragic demise accidental, as they succumbed to multiple traumatic injuries.

Another injured passenger, who was accompanying them in the front seat at the time of the accident, was transported to the local Reading Hospital. Their condition wasn’t known at the time of writing.

Officials maintained that the deceased students’ car crashed into a tree near the Reading Interchange and hit a bridge. Saurav and Manav’s single-vehicle accident took place on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Brecknock Township at 7 am on May 10, according to local media outlet Lancasteronline.com.

Consulate confirms the death of Indian students

“Deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate road accident in which two Indian students from Cleveland State University, Manav Patel and Saurav Prabhakar, lost their lives,” the Consulate General of India in New York wrote in an X post. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their families during this difficult time. The consulate is in touch with the families and has assured them of all possible assistance.”

Patel and Prabhakar’s tragic passing exacerbates the grief of Indian communities abroad. The news of their fatal US car accident comes at a time when India was already reeling from the deaths of students Vanshika Saini and Harsimrat Randhawa in Canada.
