Influencer Guava Shuishui, better known by her online alias ‘Guava Beauty,’ has sadly passed away, according to a statement shared via her Instagram account. She was reportedly just 24 years old. As per the English translation of the post’s caption, the beauty content creator died last month on May 24. Although she is said to have been “battling” with “sudden ailments,” her cause of death was not specified in the IG post.

“Guava Shuishui just changed places and continued to shine,” said the translated post, as per People. Whoever took the initiative to share the heartbreaking announcement with over 12,000 followers on her Instagram account, also took the time to thank everyone who viewed and interacted with the Taiwanese influencer’s quirky content. “… Thank you for your love and support. She really keeps it in her heart and cherishes it very much,” the post added.

Who was Guava Beauty?

Guava Shuishui, “the beauty and food broadcast treasure girl,” was widely recognised for licking or consuming makeup products on camera. Despite her own choices, she often issued a disclaimer for her viewers, forbidding them from following in her footsteps. A video dated November 13, 2024, first showed her applying a jelly blush tint on her cheeks the usual way. Moments later, she is seen using a fork to pull out the product from its packaging stick and put it in her mouth. Eventually taking a bite and presumably tasting the blush, she can’t help but squint her eyes and give a grimace.

“New project!! I’ve wanted to make this theme into a unit for a long time. Although it’s controversial, I really like it. I don’t care,” she captioned the post (originally in Chinese). “Anyway, this project is not allowed to be watched by people under 6 years old and it is forbidden to eat. Please leave a message below about the cosmetics you want to see!” This particular video is believed to be the first episode of a questionable social media series.

Influencer death: Guava Beauty’s friend speaks out

A week ago, a fellow influencer friend of Guava Beauty’s took to Instagram to debunk “so much false information” she had seen floating around on social media. In an attempt to “clarify a few things,” she revealed that while Shuishui was admitted to the hospital, her medical team “clearly ruled out an possibility related to the so-called ‘food cosmetics.'”

The IG user also warned netizens against personally attacking Guava’s family and friends. She describes Shuishui as a beloved daughter of her family and one of the warmest friends one could rely on. Furthermore, the Taiwanese influencer’s pal made a case against relying on any “insider” claiming to reveal the truth, urging everyone to steer clear of rumours.

“She is responsible to the audience and is very cautious about the content. In response to the ongoing personal attacks, lies, and even malicious mockery,” the friend went on in the translated post. “These comments have caused tremendous emotional stress and harm to her family and our close friends. Family and friends have suffered more pain and shock than imagined during this time, and we ask everyone to stop all malicious speculation and stigma.”

The Instagram bio of the young beauty influencer, who went viral for her bizarre content, now reads that she’s logged out from the world after setting off on a new journey. It further states, “All business collaborations are suspended.”

Internet was never a fan of Guava Beauty’s makeup-eating trend

According to her usual choice of new projects, Guava Shuishui took on the task of tasting or eating makeup products as a challenge. “If you dare recommend it, I dare to eat it,” she captioned one of her videos.

It came as no shock that her videos often triggered netizens to speak up against her behaviour, advising her to stop promoting eating chemical products. In light of Guava’s usual social media streak, Chinese social media users couldn’t help but speculate about her death being linked to cosmetic poisoning. A potential heart attack emerged as another common guess.

“She probably poisoned herself with the consumption of the chemicals in cosmetics,” someone wrote on X. Another chimed in, “Wouldn’t be the fact that she was eating makeup would it?”
