B2 visa: A 32-year-old woman shared her experience on Reddit about successfully obtaining a B2 visa at the US Consulate in Delhi, offering detailed insights into the application process, biometrics, and consular interview. Her post, which has resonated with many aspiring travellers, highlights practical tips for first-time applicants navigating a complex process.

DS-160 and Booking Slots

She revealed that completing the DS-160 form early was crucial. “I completed my DS 160 two days before the fees changed, so got lucky. Then the wait started to find final slots for biometrics and the interview. I had almost given up thinking that I might not get a date before August next year, but luckily I kept checking at the recommended times which is at odd hours in the night at around 1 AM or during the day and finally found a slot for December.”

VFS and Biometrics Experience

The biometrics process at the VFS Delhi office was smooth. “You reach there at least 15-20 minutes before your actual booking time. You cannot carry your electronic items such as smart watches or phones inside the office, so you need to leave it outside in either your personal vehicle or in their storage room, where they charge ₹200 for like five minutes of work.” She emphasized the importance of carrying the application confirmation letter post-biometrics, as it is critical for the interview.

Consular Interview Insights

The applicant advised arriving closer to the scheduled time to avoid long waits outside the embassy. “My appointment was for 10:30 AM and I reached outside the US Embassy by 9 AM – big mistake, no need to reach that early as they will not even let you stand in the waiting queue.”

At the interview, she was asked about her travel purpose, current employment, the friend she was visiting, and prior international travel. Her advice to future applicants is to stay honest, remember DS-160 details, and prepare answers demonstrating intent to return to India. “The key is that they already have a 90% view if they will give you the visa or not basis your kundli that they have access to – so just be honest, read your DS 160 and remember the details in there and don’t panic in front of the officer. Be an active listener. Prepare answers in a way that shows your intent to return and that you have assets (investments) or liabilities (dependent parents maybe) in India due to which you will need to come back. Also know a tentative itinerary for your days in the US. Good luck folks!”
