Indian-American supporters of Donald Trump have been left fuming this week following his comments on the ongoing Pakistan conflict. The POTUS had offered to mediate last week as India launched Operation Sindoor — calling it a “shame” and hoping for a quick end to hostilities. He also claimed that the US had ‘helped’ broker the eventual ceasefire by holding trade as a war deterrent. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has since issued a clarification, noting that trade had never been discussed with American officials.
“Indian Americans like me supported you wholeheartedly since 2016! You created hope within the Indian community. However your statements after the Pahalgam terrorist killings of Indian/Hindu tourists by Pak terrorists have been disappointing. Two statements made by you proved my theory right – I believe smart people make dumb mistakes & smarter people make dumber mistakes!” wrote one furious X user.
The lengthy post also claimed that Trump had “betrayed” the Indian-American community by “equating a terrorist country with India”. The handle (which has around 15,000 followers) also rewrote the ‘MAGA’ acronym to stand for “Made America Untrustworthy Ally” and voiced hope that Trump would “soon learn from his mistakes”.
“By equating your friendship between Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, you ended up insulting the word friendship! By threatening India to stop trade, if ceasefire was not accepted by them, you forgot the very essential element of Leadership. Good leaders are smart about making a distinction between friends and those who kill our soldiers and send them in body bags using our money to do so,” the post added.
The remarks were met with vehement agreement on social media — garnering thousands of comments, retweets and likes. Many on the social media platform insisted that they were feeling “betrayed” by the recent turn of events while others insisted that diplomacy and politics were far more nuanced.
“The man doesn’t have an understanding of subcontinent history. Someone in the WH needs to sit him down and explain it. American presidents over the past 50 years have been threatening India to toe their line. It hasn’t worked,” wrote one user.
“We feel betrayed today and absolutely at a loss for words. I am trying to defend my President but it seems impossible,” wrote another.
