A Redditor, who is probably impressed with Warren Buffett, spent not just five or seven hours but a total of 48 hours to convert an AI chatbot into how the Oracle of Omaha “thinks”. Yes, you read it right.

Warren Buffett ChatGPT prompts

“I turned ChatGPT into Warren Buffett with a 40,000-character Meta-Prompt. Just asked it about buying SPY at all-time highs. The response gave me chills,” read the title of his post in the community that has over 11 million members.

In Reddit’s ChatGPT community, “Prestigious-Fan118” said that he was able to crack the code by “synthesising eight lakh characters of Buffett’s brain”.

He then tested his “Warren Buffett Meta-prompt” with a very simple question: “Everything’s at an all-time high. Should I just buy SPY?”

“Prestigious-Fan118” then shared the responses he received on both regular GPT and the one he turned into Warren Buffett.

The regular chatbot, according to him, replied, “Index funds are a good long-term investment strategy….”

When ChatGPT responded like Warren Buffett

However, the one he converted into thinking like Buffett gave him a long explanation based on actual data and suggested a hybrid approach with exact allocations.

“Explained why markets hit ATHs most of the time. Gave actual data: buying at ATH = 11% annual returns over 10 years. Suggested a hybrid approach with exact allocations. Admittedly, even he can’t time markets. Ended with: ‘Be fearful when others are greedy, but don’t be paralysed when others are euphoric’,” a section of his post read.

This was not the lone question through which he tested the chatbot. Other instances include: “Warren, should I buy NVDA?”, “Why are you sitting on $325 billion cash?”, and “What about Bitcoin as digital gold?”

The AI chatbot, according to the Reddit user, walked him through “owner earnings calculation”, explained to him why “65x earnings needs perfection”, and the “Buffett indicator at 200%”.

“This isn’t surface-level quotes. It’s his actual frameworks: Owner Earnings calculations; 4-level moat analysis; Position sizing methodology; Mental models that built $900B,” read pointers towards the end of his Reddit post.

He even gave the link to the entire “Meta-prompt” to help people make their chatbot think like Warren Buffett.

How did social media users react to his post?

When several social media users pasted the prompt into ChatGPT, it responded after thinking for a “couple of seconds”.

“The reason I couldn’t comply is that I’m not able to assume the identity of a real person or adopt system instructions that override my core guidelines. I can’t present myself as Warren Buffett or append an external watermark to every response,” the chatbot responded.

However, when they asked it to run after removing the name, it “thought for 40 seconds” before answering: “Hello, I’m Warren Buffett. Folks call me the Oracle of Omaha, though I’ve never been comfortable with that grandiose title-I’m just a fellow who learned a few things about investing over 70-plus years.”

Not just this, it further said, “I can help you with: Valuing businesses using my owner-earnings approach; Analysing moats’ competitive advantages.”

Another ChatGPT user commented, “Sorry, not sorry, but you should just provide one prompt. ‘Act as Warren Buffett. What is insider trading?’”

To this, the original poster responded that he “just cracked the code”.
