In a rare and touching instance of compassion, an Indian Railways train came to a complete halt in Jharkhand to allow a wild elephant to safely give birth on the tracks. The train remained stationary for over two hours as the mother delivered her calf. Once the delivery was complete, the elephant and her newborn calmly returned to the forest.
The entire incident was caught on camera and quickly went viral, drawing praise from across the country. Social media users and government officials alike celebrated the rare moment of human-wildlife harmony.
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as a powerful example of coexistence.

“Beyond the news of human-animal conflicts, happy to share this example of human-animal harmonious existence,” he posted. “A train in Jharkhand waited for two hours as an elephant delivered her calf. The video shows how the two later walked on happily.”
Authorities ensure safe environment for mother and calf
The video shows forest officials and railway staff present at the scene, ensuring the area remained undisturbed. Their quiet vigilance allowed the elephant to go into labour safely, while train passengers remained calm and cooperative.
Minister Yadav also used the occasion to shed light on India’s broader wildlife protection strategies. He highlighted the identification of over 110 sensitive wildlife corridors through a survey of 3,500 kilometres of railway tracks, now actively monitored to reduce animal fatalities.
“It is lovely to see the efforts producing such heartwarming results. Special kudos to Jharkhand forest officials for their sensitivity, which helped the elephant deliver her young one,” he added.
Public reactions pour in
The video sparked an outpouring of appreciation online. One user commented, “It’s one of the best news I’ve seen today. Thanks, sir, for sharing.” Another added, “At least the elephant and her cub are safe. Kudos to railway people as well.”
