US President Donald Trump, during a recent interview with OutKick’s Clay Travis, expressed optimism about his evolving relationship with Jeff Bezos and the future direction of The Washington Post. Trump claimed that Bezos had even criticised the newspaper’s staff to him.
“They actually did a couple of bad articles on him (Bezos),” Trump said. “He said, ‘This is crazy, I lose my fortune running this thing and they [Post newsroom employees] are out of control.’ These people are crazy. They’re crazy people. They’re out of control.”
Trump also referred to Bezos as a “good guy,” emphasising how their relationship has improved since his first term. “I didn’t really know him in the first term. I mean, it’s such a difference between now and the first time,” Trump added.
Bezos focuses on opinion pages
Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and owner of The Washington Post, recently announced changes to the newspaper’s opinion pages. In a February post on X (formerly Twitter), Bezos stated that the outlet would prioritise two pillars: personal liberties and free markets.
“We are going to be writing every day in support and defence of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets,” Bezos wrote. “Viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to others.”
I shared this note with the Washington Post team this morning:
— Jeff Bezos (@JeffBezos) February 26, 2025
I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages.
We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. We’ll cover other topics too…
Bezos expressed his belief that these viewpoints are underserved in today’s media landscape and emphasized his excitement to fill that void.
Past conflicts
Bezos previously faced backlash from Post staffers when he reportedly blocked an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris shortly before the 2024 election. However, Trump praised the recent changes, saying Bezos is “really trying to be more fair.”
Reflecting on his current presidency, Trump noted a shift in support. “If you look at the inauguration, look at the people that were on that stage. It’s a much different presidency. I have much more support now,” he said.
