Second Lady Usha Vance, once a high-powered lawyer, has largely stayed out of the spotlight, leading to speculation about her views, which many believe differ from those of her husband, Vice President JD Vance. Usha has faced relentless trolling over her Indian heritage, religion and her husband’s controversial remarks.

However, recently, social media users rallied behind her after JD Vance made an offhand comment about her during an event in Michigan. As Usha stood behind him, the Vice President praised her role as Second Lady before joking, “The cameras are all on; anything I say, no matter how crazy, she has to smile, laugh and celebrate it.”

While Usha did smile and laugh, the remark triggered backlash online, with many finding it unsettling and reminiscent of his past controversial statements.

Social media erupted with criticism, with users suggesting Usha was trapped in an unhappy marriage. “His attempt at humor is always tasteless… or is that just me?” one user questioned.

Others called the comment a “red flag,” with one writing, “She should consult a lawyer and ensure her safety and that of her children.” Another remarked, “She looks miserable.”

Many criticised JD Vance’s words as demeaning, with one comment reading, “Making fun of your wife is not the flex you think it is.” Another added, “JD Vance saying his wife has to ‘smile, laugh, and celebrate’ whatever he says—no matter how crazy—is straight-up creepy. Political spouses aren’t props. It’s 2025.”
