Samsung employees are reportedly the latest to be affected by the wave of tech layoffs this year. A woman on Reddit, who goes by the username “UndercoverGeekGirl”, has claimed that the South Korean company has started laying off its US staff.

Samsung layoffs started

In her post on Reddit’s “layoffs” community two days ago, she claimed that the company abruptly terminated several “longtime” employees without any prior warning.

“Notice: Samsung layoffs started,” read the title of the employee’s four-sentence Reddit post. It was marked under the tag: “recently laid off”.

“Samsung began laying off some US employees this morning. Our whole team of longtime employees was cut,” the woman claimed.

She added that some employees, who were on business trips, were left stranded because of the company’s sudden decision. “Some employees who were travelling on business trips were left stranded with their company cards closed without warning. I don’t know how far-reaching it is at this stage.”

Samsung layoffs part of last year’s plan?

One Reddit user speculated that these layoffs might be tied to a broader round of global job cuts reported last year. In September last year, Reuters reported that Samsung was planning to reduce staff by up to 30% in certain divisions, directing its global subsidiaries to cut sales and marketing personnel by around 15% and administrative staff by as much as 30%.

In response to her post, one Reddit user said, “Leaving people stranded is not okay, and I hope they take legal action. My company did some layoffs while people were travelling, and they were to immediately return home, and once they were home, they were told why.”

“The terrible companies behaved like this, but not the best ones. Now it’s all of them. This is the worst generation of business executives in history,” another angry user wrote.

A third commented, “Several companies now include clauses in their severance packages prohibiting laid-off employees from ‘public disparagement’. So, this prevents naming the ‘terrible’ companies unless you are not affiliated.”

“Some people at my company were laid off during sabbatical while they were on vacation,” one individual recalled.

Another shared, “That happened where I worked. They laid off 45% of their workforce mid-morning on Friday. By midday, everyone who was part of the RIF was locked out of everything. If you weren’t there for the announcement, some didn’t find out until they tried to log in next.”

“My previous F50 employer did this to my friend – laid her off while in Mexico. They told her they’d just figure expenses out, and she was to fly home to the US immediately. Her email got shut off within an hour of notification,” yet another user claimed.
