Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra shared a heartfelt video on his X (formerly Twitter). The video shows an 88-year-old retired police officer pulling a cycle cart and picking up garbage one piece at a time.

“This clip which was shared with me is about Shri Inder Jit Singh Sidhu of Chandigarh. Apparently, every morning at 6 AM, in the quiet streets of Chandigarh’s sector 49, this 88-year-old retired police officer begins his day in service,” Mahindra wrote.

Adding to that he wrote, “Armed with nothing but a cycle cart and an unwavering sense of duty, he moves slowly and purposefully, picking up rubbish from the roadside.

Not happy with city’s cleanliness rank – so he acts

Sidhu was disappointed with the city’s poor ranking in the Swachh Survekshan, a national cleanliness survey. But instead of complaining, he took up a broom and a cart. “He says he wasn’t happy with the ‘low rank’ Chandigarh got in the Swachh Surekshan listing. But instead of complaining, he chooses action,” Mahindra wrote.

Powerfully concluding the tweet, he wrote, “In a world often obsessed with youth and speed, his slow but steady footsteps tell us that Purpose doesn’t retire. Service doesn’t age. A Salute to this quiet warrior of the streets.”

How netizens react

Sidhu’s actions are getting noticed and praised, not just because of what he’s doing, but because of what it stands for.

Under Mahindra’s post, a user commented: “A lot of us talk, most of us litter while he acts. This is inspirational but also saddening because we lack in the very basic civic sense as a society.”

Another user shared similar sentiments by writing, “He proves that true service needs no title or spotlight. His quiet dedication is a reminder that real change begins with action, not complaints. Salute to his spirit.”

One more user reflected, “Instead of waiting for government solutions, he became one. Reminds me of my grandfather who cleaned our local park every Sunday.”
