Ever wondered how the Maha Kumbh Mela looks from space? NASA astronaut Don Pettit, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), has shared a breathtaking image of the grand pilgrimage along the Ganges River at night.

The image, posted on social media X, highlights the scale of the grand religious gathering with a dazzling display of lights illuminating the sacred site.

In his post, Pettit remarked, “The largest human gathering in the world is well lit,” emphasising the immense scale and visibility of the festival even from space. The Maha Kumbh Mela, which takes place once every 12 years, draws millions of pilgrims from around the world who gather to take a holy dip in the sacred river, seeking spiritual purification and blessings.

The ISS orbits Earth at an altitude of approximately 420 kilometres (260 miles), allowing astronauts like Pettit to capture extraordinary views of major events and landmarks on the planet. The bright lights of the Kumbh Mela stand out vividly against the night, showcasing the festival’s cultural and spiritual significance on a global scale.

Pettit, known for his passion for photography and sharing Earth’s beauty from space, has previously captured other iconic events and natural wonders from the ISS. Don Pettit arrived at the ISS on September 11, 2024, as part of the Soyuz MS-26 mission, accompanied by Russian cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner. During his six-month stay in orbit, Pettit will participate in a variety of scientific research projects and contribute to ongoing maintenance and upgrades of the ISS. He is currently serving as a crew member of Expedition 72, playing a vital role in the station’s daily operations and experiments aimed at advancing human space exploration.
