Like every industry, the tech industry has witnessed a huge transformation in recent years. From integrating AI to the workforce to the increased number of layoffs, a lot has changed in the tech industry landscape.

Raising a similar concern, a Microsoft employee of seven years introspects on how things have changed in their company.

The employee says that two senior engineers working on a major project have already accepted new offers, while another colleague has requested referrals from peers.

What does the post explain?

“I’ve been at Microsoft for 7 years, and it’s never been like this,” says one anonymous employee who shared the post, noting that their own manager had suddenly booked a series of back-to-back ‘personal’ meetings, an uncommon occurrence within the company.

“This feels like something’s brewing. It’s not just the usual post-vesting shuffle. People are jumping ship.” The timing of these exits seems to coincide with the typical post-vesting season, a period when employees who have earned stock awards may consider leaving the company to cash out.

‘This is not a good culture’

Netizens posted their opinion on the post. A user noted, “The culture here, at least in my org, has dramatically shifted – along with the leaders. I no longer feel like I have a sense of purpose, I’m completely at the whims of whatever the topic of the day is. I’m currently shopping for a car for an impending commute while also feel less secure than I ever have in my career. I’m watching managers become pinballs, they look completely powerless.”

He continued, “I’ve got a good gig, I don’t feel “dirty” or bad about the work that I do, I make good money. But I’m entering a point in my career where I’d love to have more of an impact on the world around me rather than help a multi-trillion dollar company eek out another percent of growth at the cost of my sanity.”

Another user added, “People are not voluntarily leaving Microsoft, rather Microsoft looks at anyone who is age 55 or older, or has 10+ years of direct Microsoft experience, whom they are pushing out through either via the new work from the office program, made up performance issues, and or just directly offering people packages to get them to leave. Microsoft prefers a world full of H-1Bs whom they can control more fully and pay a hell of a lot less than a multiple six figure American employee.”

“Some people are also getting terminated or taking voluntary packages to leave. But op as a Msft newbie of 3 year tenure the biggest selling point of this place was wlb and stability with decent pay. Pay is decent and stability is going down across the board gradually so it makes sense for those that can find alternatives to do so,” added another.
