In a horrifying tragedy in East Java, Indonesia, a couple survived a terrifying jump from an unfinished highway after allegedly following faulty directions on Google Maps. The accident happened on April 5 around 10 pm on the Krian-Gresik toll road, a section which is still under construction, as reported by Kompas, an Indonesian news outlet.

Distracted driver was following Google Maps

A 61-year old Rudie Heru Komandono drove the car through a gap in a concrete barrier, reportedly got distracted by the GPS on his phone. He failed to notice the warning signs that the road was incomplete. The car fell between 5 to 12 metres before crashing onto a lower highway. A viral video shows a black BMW jumping from the elevated road and crashing near a tree. Both Komandono and his 46-year-old passenger, Endang Sri Wahyuni suffered only minor injuries.

Social Media reactions on viral video crash

The video attracted widespread reaction online. One user wrote, ”Lucky escape for everyone out there,” highlighting the unbelievable survival. Another commented humorously, ”Google Maps is meant for flying cars..”. A third user added another perspective, stating, ”It takes time to map new roads or flyovers in Google Maps. I don’t think it’s because of maps but misunderstanding the directions and no signboards.”

Recently in the beginning of this month in India, a suspected GPS error had disastrous consequences. As reported by NDTV, two girls lost their lives on the Delhi-Lucknow highway when a container truck crashed with a car which was returning from Nainital. Police doubted the car may have taken a wrong turn because of flowing instructions on Google Maps. The accident’s impact jammed locks of all the doors, leaving the passengers stuck for nearly an hour. Two other passengers who got severely injured were sent to hospital for medical treatment.

Lot of incidents in recent times have sparked concerns related to Google Maps directions.
