The Mumbai Monorail, carrying over 200 passengers, came to a halt near Mysore Colony station on Tuesday evening after a power outage struck around 6:15 PM. Rescue operations were immediately launched, with the Mumbai Fire Brigade deploying three snorkel vehicles to assist stranded commuters.

Did Simpsons predict Monorail’s failure?

But even as the incident unfolded, the Internet couldn’t help but draw parallels to a decades-old The Simpsons episode, wondering if the sitcom had “predicted” the fiasco.

In the 1993 episode Marge vs the Monorail, the town of Springfield inaugurates the rail. Things go haywire on its very first ride, as the brakes fail and passengers’ lives are put in danger. The chaos only ends when the monorail is stopped by tying its “M” logo to a giant doughnut sign.

While the Simpsons episode was intended as a humorous take on shoddy planning and substandard construction, people were quick enough to draw comparisons with Mumbai’s own troubled monorail system.

‘Start watching Simpsons…,’ suggests social media

One social media user shared pictures from the episode and said, “The Simpsons already predicted the Mumbai Monorail failure. At this point, we should all just start watching The Simpsons before making life decisions.”

Another added, “Simpson predicted the Mumbai monorail accident too.”

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said Tuesday that an investigation into the incident will be conducted.

“Due to some technical reason, a Monorail is stuck between Chembur and Bhakti Park. MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority), the fire brigade, and the municipal corporation, all agencies, have reached the spot. The highest priority is being given to the safety of all passengers,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The Chief Minister added, “I request everyone to remain patient. I am in contact with the MMRDA Commissioner, the Municipal Commissioner, the police, and all relevant agencies. An inquiry will also be conducted into why this incident occurred.”
